This checks wording only. Your name is not stored or sent anywhere until you choose to search the official register.
What makes a name unavailable
- Same as an existing name. Names are treated as the same if they differ only by punctuation, “Limited”, “UK” or similar words.
- Too like an existing name. Another company can object within 12 months if your name is too similar to theirs.
- Sensitive words and expressions. Words like “Bank”, “Royal” or “Charity” need justification or permission.
- Offensive or misleading names are refused.
A company name is not a trade mark. To protect your brand, consider registering a trade mark. Full rules: how to choose a company name and GOV.UK incorporation and names guidance.
